Ellison in AI Answers

What ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity actually say when a metro Detroit homeowner asks who should paint their house, measured across 360 answers, and what the companies that beat Ellison are doing differently.

46.9% of all answers named Ellison Painting. No other painter came close.

Ellison is winning. It is the most-recommended residential painter in metro Detroit across the four major answer engines, at nearly double the next name (CertaPro at 25.1%, Somerset at 24.6%). When Ellison is named it is usually named first, at an average position of 1.4.

All four companies Brad asked about rank below Ellison, and two of them barely register. The real rivals in AI answers are companies he did not name.

There is one clear hole. On ChatGPT, by far the most-used engine, Ellison appears in only 23% of answers against 49% to 64% everywhere else. That gap has a specific, fixable cause, and it is the spine of this report.

The four you asked about

MacFarland, Top Shelf, The Exterior Painters, Elite

All four sit below Ellison overall. They are not interchangeable though: each one is strong in a different engine and a different set of towns, and two of them beat Ellison somewhere.

ChatGPT12%
Gemini23%
Perplexity13%

The strongest of your four, and the only one that beats Ellison in any city: Grosse Pointe, 50% to 42%. Gemini likes it most. Absent entirely from Rochester and Ferndale.

Top Shelf Painting12.5%
Oakland and Macomb
ChatGPT3%
Gemini8%
Perplexity34%

Ellison leads or ties a competitor leads Share of answers naming the brand for that town's prompts

What this says

Ellison leads 9 of 12 towns outright and ties 2 more. It loses exactly two, and both are worth knowing about.

Grosse Pointe is a real contest. MacFarland takes it 50% to 42%, the only place any of the four genuinely outperforms Ellison on equal footing.

Rochester is not a contest, it is an absence. The Exterior Painters takes it at 33% while Ellison scores zero, because there is a /rochester-hills/ page and no /rochester/ page. Neighbouring Rochester Hills is Ellison's single strongest town at 69%. That is the cheapest win in this entire report.

Why the gap exists

ChatGPT answers these questions differently from the other three. It leans almost entirely on directory and aggregator pages rather than reading contractor websites. Across the 360 answers, ChatGPT cited angi.com in 53 runs, bbb.org in 33, reviews.birdeye.com in 26, houzz.com in 19, homeadvisor.com in 15 and expertise.com in 11. Gemini, Claude and Perplexity cited these sources close to never.

Ellison is missing or weak on almost every one of those directories. That is the whole mechanism. It is not a website problem, a content problem or a crawler-blocking problem, and it is worth being precise about that, because those are the three things a team would normally go and fix.

The gaps

What the others do that Ellison does not

Each item was independently verified by fetching the live page. Findings that did not survive that check were dropped, including the theory that Ellison blocks AI crawlers, which is false.

01 A fully indexable duplicate of the brand was live on legacy.ellisonpainting.com Fixed 24 Aug

An old copy of the site was still online and explicitly telling search engines and AI crawlers to index it. It was the source of several claims that appear nowhere on the real site, and ChatGPT quoted it during testing. Two versions of Ellison were competing for the same answers.

This is resolved. Every URL on the subdomain now returns a 301 to the live site, including its sitemaps, so it no longer serves anything indexable.

Was
HTTP 200 with a meta robots tag reading follow, index, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, and sitemaps listing 81 URLs.
Equity at risk
None. Zero backlinks and zero ranked keywords, both confirmed against the DataForSEO backlink and ranked-keyword indexes. For scale, the main domain carries 71 backlinks from 60 referring domains.
Done
Two Cloudflare page rules handle the domain move: one strips the /blog/ prefix the current site dropped, one passes every other path through unchanged. Both 301, query strings preserved. The 19 posts whose slugs changed during the rebuild had their old slugs registered in WordPress, so the site now redirects those itself. Verified by requesting all 81 URLs: 76 land on a live page, 75 of them on the exact intended target.
Pre-flight
All 85 active Meta ads were checked for legacy URLs before the switch. None referenced the subdomain, so no live campaign was affected.
Residual
5 URLs still land on a 404, all of them pages rather than posts: two old service URLs, a retired ad landing page, an event page and a terms page. WordPress only applies its old-slug redirect to posts, so pages need a rule each. None carries any backlink or ranking, so this is link tidiness rather than lost value.
Next
The subdomain can be switched off entirely whenever you like. The redirects run at Cloudflare's edge, so they keep working with no origin behind them. Leave the DNS record in place and the old install can be deleted outright.
02 Ellison is absent from Expertise.com, the hand-curated list ChatGPT leans on hardest High impactCost unknown

Expertise.com publishes a curated "best painters" list per city. Thirteen metro Detroit painters are on the Rochester Hills page. Ellison is not one of them. Top Shelf, Expert Painting, M.V.P., Walls-N-All, Diamond and Somerset all are.

Verified
Fetched the Rochester Hills, Troy and Detroit pages. A case-insensitive search for "ellison" returns zero on all three.
Fix
Submit through expertise.com/review-me for Rochester Hills, Troy and Detroit. Ask them to open a Birmingham page.
Caution
The page routes to a sales line and the footer references a paid marketing agreement. Submit free first and treat any pitch as a separate decision. Do not promise this as free until someone has called and asked.
03 Two competing Yelp profiles, and the one collecting the ad spend has zero reviews High impactMedium effort

There is a Rochester Hills profile carrying 3.7 stars from 3 reviews, and a separate Royal Oak profile with no reviews at all. The Royal Oak one is the profile receiving paid placement and generating quote requests. Lead volume is accruing to a listing with no review equity, while the reviewed listing carries a rating well below Ellison's real standing.

Evidence
Both profiles confirmed live via rendered fetch. The Royal Oak ad unit shows response time and recent quote requests, so it is converting. Royal Oak is a service area on Ellison's own site, not a second office.
Fix
Merge into the Rochester Hills profile, then run a review push to lift 3.7. Three reviews is a small enough base that a handful of happy customers moves it quickly.
04 The Angi profile is filed under the wrong city Medium impactFree to test

Angi was ChatGPT's single most-cited source, appearing in 53 of the answers. Ellison has a profile at 5.0 stars, but it is registered to "Oakland, MI" rather than Rochester Hills, and it does not appear on the Rochester Hills top-ten pages the engine actually reads.

Verified
Profile URL is angi.com/companylist/us/mi/oakland/ellison-painting-llc-reviews-1.htm. 5.0 stars, 20 reviews, "in business since 2022". The Rochester Hills list pages contain no Ellison.
Fix
Correct the registered city and service area first. That costs nothing. Only commit to a review campaign if the geography fix does not move placement.
05 No Houzz profile at all, where the competitive bar is single digits Medium impactLow effort

Houzz was cited in 19 answers, all of them ChatGPT. Ellison has no Michigan profile. Birmingham Bloomfield Painting holds a directory slot on 8 reviews, so presence matters far more than volume here.

Evidence
Houzz Rochester Hills painters directory lists Somerset at 4.8 from 96 reviews, MacFarland at 4.6 from 33, Birmingham Bloomfield at 4.9 from 8. No Ellison.
Fix
Create the free profile and load existing project photography. Ellison already has the photo library. Treat review accumulation as a separate, slower effort, since Houzz reviews require the customer to make an account.
06 The BBB listing is unrated because BBB thinks the company is under six months old Medium impactFree

BBB was cited in 33 answers. Ellison's profile carries no rating, and the stated reason is that the business has been trading for less than six months. That is provably wrong, and it is one field.

Evidence
Profile states it is not rated "because it has been in business less than 6 months". File opened 20 Apr 2026. Angi and Yelp both record the company as established 2022.
Fix
Claim the profile and correct the founding date. Accreditation is a separate paid decision, and the dues are set locally, so get a written quote before budgeting anything.
07 The review count contradicts itself in machine-readable metadata CredibilityLow effort

Different city pages ship different review claims in their meta description tags, which is exactly the field an engine reads and repeats. Two pages claim a number materially higher than the verified figure.

Verified
Fetched 24 Aug 2026. /troy/ says "500+ 5-star Google reviews". /royal-oak/ says "800+ five-star reviews". /grosse-pointe/ says "800+ 5-star reviews". Birdeye records 4.9 from 507. An older landing page says "430+".
Fix
Pick one verified number, apply it everywhere, and put it in schema so the engines read a single figure. This also settles a discrepancy that has been sitting across the site and our records for months.
08 The homepage carries bare Organization schema, not LocalBusiness Medium impactTicket already open

None of Ellison's facts are machine-readable. There is no rating, no service area, no founding date and no service catalogue in the markup. Everything an engine would quote has to be inferred from prose or borrowed from a directory.

Evidence
The Yoast JSON-LD graph contains WebPage, ImageObject, WebSite and Organization only. The Organization node holds name, url and logo. No aggregateRating, areaServed, foundingDate or hasOfferCatalog.
Fix
Convert to LocalBusiness or HousePainter with rating, the 18 service cities and the full service list. This lands inside the schema work already opened after the OTTO rollback on 17 Aug, whose next documented step was configuring Yoast org data.
09 No founding year and no warranty term anywhere on the site CompoundingLow effort

Tenure and warranty are the two things the engines quote most often as the reason to recommend somebody. Expert Painting gets named on "since 1975". Ellison publishes neither, and offers "Satisfaction Guaranteed" instead of a term.

Evidence
Nine pages scraped. Zero matches for "founded", "established", "since 19" or "since 20". The only warranty mentions are a proposal-contents line and a keyword block.
Fix
State the founding year, and lead with the countable assets Ellison already publishes and rivals do not, such as projects completed and the real review count.
Blocked on
The actual warranty term needs confirming before it is published anywhere.
10 City pages are roughly a quarter the depth of MacFarland's on the same cities Lower priorityMedium effort

Ellison has 18 city pages, which is competitive in count. They are thin and templated. Measured on a matched pair, MacFarland's Birmingham page runs 1,651 words of body copy against Ellison's 409.

Note
Rank this below the directory work. MacFarland's national mention volume is driven by a large colour and how-to content library, and it is a Livonia commercial painter rather than a direct rival for Oakland County residential work. Depth is worth fixing on its own merits, not as a way to catch MacFarland.
Blind spots

Where Ellison does not exist at all

Three query types returned Ellison in zero of twelve runs each, despite Ellison selling all three services.

QueryPresenceDiagnosis
Exterior painting in Rochester, Michigan0 / 12There is a /rochester-hills/ page but no /rochester/ page. Rochester Hills itself scores 69%, the strongest city on the board. Cleanest quick win here.
Commercial painting contractors, Oakland County0 / 12Three commercial pages exist and none of them surface. Pages are present but carry no third-party corroboration.
Epoxy garage floor coatings, metro Detroit0 / 12Same pattern. Two epoxy pages live, zero visibility. Specialist coating firms own these answers.
Top rated painters in Troy3 / 12City page exists. Weakest of the served cities.
Reliable house painter, Oakland County3 / 12County-level phrasing performs far worse than city-level. Worth its own page treatment.
Cabinet painting, Rochester Hills11 / 12The strongest single result in the study. Whatever is working here is worth copying to the other services.
Sequence

What to do, in order

  1. Fix the three review-count claims in metadata and settle on one verified number.Free, and it closes a claim inconsistency that has been open in our notes since before this study.
  2. Correct the Angi city registration and the BBB founding date. Both free, both single fields, both on sources ChatGPT cites heavily.
  3. Merge the two Yelp profiles and run a review push on the survivor.3.7 stars is the only rating in this report that actively hurts.
  4. Create the Houzz profile.Free, photography already exists, and the bar for a directory slot is single-digit review counts.
  5. Call Expertise.com and establish whether editorial inclusion costs anything.Highest-value listing in the set. Find out the price before promising it.
  6. Ship LocalBusiness schema with rating, service area and founding date.Folds into the Yoast work already queued from the 17 Aug OTTO rollback.
  7. Build a Rochester city page. The only outright content hole in the study, and its neighbour is the best-performing city on the board.
  8. Then reassess.Re-run this same 360-answer panel in 60 days. The prompt set and scripts are saved, so a repeat costs about $17 and produces a directly comparable number.
Scope

Open questions and honest limits

Two things we need from you

  • Are these four companies competitors, or peers you know from elsewhere? Two are unambiguously in your market. MacFarland is Livonia and mostly commercial. "Elite Painting" and "Top Shelf Painting" are generic names with businesses in several states, and we matched them to Michigan companies without confirmation. This changes the framing of the report, not its method.
  • What is the actual workmanship warranty term? We have one year on file, but it appears nowhere on the site. We have left it out of every recommendation until you confirm the real term.

What this does not measure

  • Not traffic, not leads. This is a consideration-stage visibility measure. It says nothing about revenue.
  • Not rank. Answers are non-deterministic, so ordering is unstable between runs. Average position is included as texture, not as a scoreboard.
  • Source counts skew to ChatGPT. It emits inline links; the other three cite differently, so the directory table under-represents them by construction.
  • Geography is written into the prompt rather than set by IP, which is the controlled and reproducible choice, but it is not identical to a homeowner searching from their kitchen.

A note on the second dataset

A separate national mention index shows MacFarland far ahead of Ellison, at 317 mentions to 32. That measures ambient mentions across every topic in the United States, not metro Detroit painting queries, and MacFarland's figure is inflated by a large paint-colour content library. On the question that matters, who gets recommended to a homeowner in Ellison's own market, Ellison leads MacFarland by roughly three to one. We are including the national figure only so it does not surprise you somewhere else.
